Super Sekrat Projekt ™

July 26, 2010 Underground Writers, Writing

Ok, so it’s been a bit longer than expected since my last post. Don’t worry everyone, I’m not dead. Just been a little busy. My fiancee was home earlier than expected on Thursday, and left again late yesterday. In the interest of a future happy marriage, and our personal greed, we spent the whole time together. Meaning there was no writing done between Thursday and now. That’s not to say I haven’t done anything writing related since my last real post. Oh no, I’ve done quite a bit.

First, I began work on a Super Sekrat Projekt ™. What is this Super Sekrat Projekt ™? If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret. That being said, I am willing to divulge a few minor details in the interest of keeping track of progress. This project is going to be  a novel, possibly even a trilogy. The story involves supernatural characters of two different types. So far, I have completed:

  • Project Summary (including plot-listing)
  • 45 outline points (equivalent to 45% of novel)
  • 3 character sketches involving the villain, and the two main characters

By Thursday, I plan to have the following completed for this project:

  • 100 ouline points (equivalent to 100% of novel)
  • Setting Cards
  • Research List

The long-goal on this project is to have the 1st draft completed before school starts in September. I want the 2nd draft completed by National Novel Writing Month (November).  And I plan to get a good edit completed by mid-December. There’s a place I want to try it before the end of 2010. It probably won’t be fully polished when I send it, but deadlines are deadlines, and since that location is not where I want to actually get it published, it’s no skin off my back if I’m met with rejection. If they grab it, I’m sure they’ll want more edits, but find me a publisher that doesn’t, and I’ll find you a fake publisher. I’m excited, there’s a lot going on with this piece, and I think I can scratch it out nicely and quickly.

I’ve also been reading L.A. Banks’ Never Cry Werewolf. I’ll probably have it finished before Thursday. I’ll be writing up a review and post-dating the post for the following Tuesday. It’s part 4 in an ongoing series. I know its horrible to start reviewing a series mid-way through, but I don’t want to go back and review early books at this point. There’s too many spoilers that I may accidentally reveal.

I also plan to read Randolph Lalonde’s latest: Spinward Fringe Broadcast 6: Fragments. I had hoped to have it read by Thursday, but I’m thinking I may leave it for my first few days in Ottawa. Yes, this isn’t a horror novel. Lalonde has done some horror as well, but this is the series that has contributed to his success. I will be writing a review of this book once I complete it.

I’ve been doing some searching online for writing groups in Ottawa, and have been pretty sorely disappointed with what I’ve been able to find. There’s a group on Meetup that sounds cool, but they appear to have broken up. Most of the writing groups seem to write “literary fiction’, which to me is boring as all hell. That tells me they aren’t the groups for me. I’ll have to keep looking when I enjoy my coffee in the mornings, but I think it may work out a little better once I have my feet on the ground in Ottawa. With everything else that I’ll have to focus on, I don’t think I’ll be looking for a group as active as the Underground Writers, but I also don’t want some sleepytime “one day, eventually, maybe we’ll get published” group or a “self-pub only” group.

Also, ChiZine has posted their contest winners and honourable mentions. It looks like “Thrown Away” did not make the top 6 of 121 entries. I’d say I was disappointed, but I’m not. I would have loved to receive e-mail notification that I wasn’t a winner, but that isn’t that big a deal. It means that I’ll be able to turn it around and send it to the next market on my list (Apex). So that counts as another point on the chart, bringing me to a total of 2 points since we started tracking. He’re hoping for a nicer result.

In non-writing / reading news, my last day of work was this past Friday. This week is going to be 90% spent packing up for the move to Ottawa. As such, don’t be surprised if my Thursday post is a little thin. I better get back to that actually. Have a good week everyone!
