It’s been a couple of weeks, and whole lot of matches. With some pretty surprising upsets, teams have certainly jumped around in these ratings. Here’s how things fell out.

The first match of the week saw Toronto FC’s winning streak come to an end as New York Red Bulls would force a draw. A 6-game winning streak is still a great accomplishment, so TFC players and fans should be quite happy with all the points they have in the bank as the season continues to roll forward. Unlike lead-leading TFC, both Vancouver and Montreal managed to win against Kansas City and Portland respectively. These triumphs were enough to guide Vancouver above the 1400 elo-point average for MLS teams, and brought Montreal just below the threshold.
The first leg of the Voyageur’s Cup semifinals kicked off on the 23rd with a match in Ottawa. It was Ottawa Fury FC’s 1st match against Toronto FC, and they managed to squeeze out a 2-1 victory. A loss by TFC in regular season play would hurt, losing to a lower-division side during the V-Cup really put a damper on their ratings. Vancouver also managed a 2-1 victory over Montreal, sending the Quebec-based side well below the league average while VWFC climbed higher.
Montreal Impact FC would have the following weekend off. In contrast, Toronto FC would take a goal fest in the “Trillium Cup” and demolish Columbus Crew, while Vancouver Whitecaps FC would drop a 0-1 decision to DC United due to some poor refereeing. Of course, the big event of the week was the Voyageur’s Cup match on Tuesday which saw a rejuvenated Montreal steal a path to the Cup Finals over a younger Whitecaps side. With a 4-2 scoreline in the match, 5-4 on aggregate, Montreal leaps in the rankings and handily overtake their West Coast opponents in the elo-ratings.
With Toronto FC hosting Ottawa Fury FC tonight in the 2nd leg of the Voyageur’s Cup, we’ll likely see more of TFC’s first team on the field. Although I, and many others, would love to see the upset, in all reality it is unlikely. We can expect Ottawa’s elo to drop from 1300 and TFC’s to take a slight jump.

FC Edmonton had the first week of this update off as a result of New York taking a flight to Saudi Arabia for a scoreless draw that has no meaning. As a result, their only match this update came at home against Indy Eleven.
On the bright side, they actually won. Yes, FC Edmonton managed their 2nd victory of the season, breaking a long winless streak, and pulled closer to USL-reserve teams in the elo-rankings. With a score of just under 1149, they are now 32 points behind USL’s Toronto FC II.

With Whitecaps FC 2 on a bye-week, both Toronto FC II and Ottawa Fury FC would have 3 matches before the West Coast side would see the field. TFCII managed to get a goal against Tampa Bay Rowdies, but ultimately fell with a 1-3 scoreline. Ottawa Fury FC then managed a pair of victories, taking down New York Red Bulls II 4-3 on the 20th. The second victory came in the Voyageur’s Cup match against MLS-side Toronto FC, with a score of 2-1. With the V-Cup more heavily weighted than the USL-season and the much higher elo of league-leading TFC, Ottawa shot up to an elo-rating just shy of 1293.
Toronto FC II’s mid-week match against Richmond Kickers would be a scoreless draw, while they gave up 1 goal and 3 points in their weekend match against FC Cincinnati. Ottawa Fury FC on the other hand, continued their winning ways and toppled Richmond Kickers with in a 5-3 goal-fest. Coming off the boost from their match against TFC, this victory propelled the team just slightly over 1300 points. If Montreal Impact FC & Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue with middling-to-poor performance, and Ottawa Fury FC manage to win tonight against Toronto FC, we just might see a competition between the Canadian teams at the bottom of Division 1 & top of Division 2 in these elo-ratings. The other reserve team, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, fell on Sunday to Real Monarchs, 2-1.

League1 Ontario saw some of the strong teams solidify their hold. Ottawa South United was not one of those teams. OSU took a tumble on a 4-0 loss to Durham, which has been a middling team so far this season. Oakville managed to move up to a statistical tie with OSU as a result of a 3-0 road win against a struggling FC London. Sigma FC would continue to dominate, with a 6-1 victory over Sanjaxx Lions. Woodbridge also managed to tighten their hold by downing Toronto Skillz 2-1. Vaughan Azzurri would see a loss to North Toronto Nitros, and Master’s Futbol would see their 1st victory of the season with a 4-3 goalfest against Aurora United. TFCIII and Windsor TFC would both see victories on the Saturday against North Mississuaga (2-1) and ProStars FC (4-0) respectively.
Midweek brought a League1 Ontario Cup match, facing off Sigma FC with Toronto FC III. Although not a very high scoring game, the match was quite an upset as TFCIII managed a 1-0 victory over Sigma, who was top of the elo-ratings for L1O. As a result of this upset, Sigma fell to 3rd position after Vaughan & Woodbridge, and is now the only top-3 team to not be advancing through the 2nd round in the cup competition.
The second weekend of play brought 34 goals, if you include Master’s L1O Cup match against North Toronto Nitros. With 5 huge-scoring matches, either we need to train some better keepers, or League1 Ontario is blessed with some really talented offensive players. FC London dropped a 4-3 decision on Prostars FC. Vaughan Azzurri maintained 1st place in L1O elo-ratings with a 5-0 victory over OSU Force. TFC III downed Sanjaxx 5-0, while Durham United FA dropped Toronto Skillz FC 5-0. Sigma FC only managed a 3-3 draw against Windsor TFC, which contributed to Woodbridge Strikers’ taking 2nd-place in the Elo after their 1-0 victory over Aurora. Rounding things out, Oakville Blue Devils and Masters Futbol both lost by a goal to North Mississuaga Panthers and North Toronto Nitros respectively

The first week of play was all about the away-teams. Every single away team took 3-points in victories that ranged from a 9-1 blowout by AS Blainville over CS St Hubert, to the 2-goal victories of CS Longueuil (2-0) and FC Gatineau (3-1) against Dynamo de Quebec and FC Lanaudiere respectively. Interestingly, the three victors found themselves to be more securely at the top of the PLSQ’s elo-ratings ranging between 914 for AS Blainville and 906 for FC Gatineau. CS Mont-Royal Outremont, who dominated last season had the week off, but sit in 5th at just over the league’s average 900 points.
The second weekend of action continued to alter the PLSQ landscape as FC Gatineau and AS Blainville each took home victories over Dynamo de Quebec and FC Lanaudiere. The continued victories propelled AS Blainville to 1st in PLSQ’s elo-ratings, and helped FC Gatineau move into 3rd with 912 points. CS Longueuil & CS Mont-Royal Outremont ended the weekend with a scoreless tie.

Given the Premier Development League’s short season, there is always a flurry of matches. This update is no different, with 8-matches in the 1st week after my previous elo-ratings update. K-W United FC started things off on May 18th with a 0-3 loss against West Virginia Chaos. TSS FC Rovers then managed to get some revenge against Calgary Foothills FC with a 2-1 home victory on the 19th. The 20th saw K-W lost 4-0 to Derby City Rovers, while WSA lost 0-2 to Des Moines Menace. Winnipeg would lose again on the 21st to St Louis Lions (0-3), on the 23rd & 24th to Saint Louis FC U-23 (0-1 & 0-2 respectively). Also on the 21st, Calgary Foothills FC would redeem themselves with a 1-0 victory over Seattle Sounders FC U-23.
With only 6 matches on May 26th & 28th, Winnipeg may have started at the bottom of the PDL area of the elo-ratings, but between their 1-1 tie against Chicago, and a double-loss by TSS FC Rovers 3-1 to Lane and 3-0 to Seattle, they were able to step a couple points out of the doghouse. Sadly, this puts the new club well below the expectations that came from their battles with Calgary Foothills FC, who surprisingly did not play this weekend. Both K-W United FC and Victoria Highlanders FC saw a reversal of fortunes as the Ontario-based team defeated West Virginia Chaos 3-1, while the Vancouver Island-based team lost by an 86th minute goal to Seattle. K-W not sits top of the rankings, followed by Calgary, and Victoria in 3rd.
Thunder Bay Chill still have yet to play a match.
