April finished off with a number of big wins and troubling losses. With the top-4 leagues, comprising 12 Canadian Teams, now actively playing, there’s been some interesting movement that is important to watch.
Top by League & Biggest Movers
It all came down to the final weekend, but Montreal Impact FC have flipped the script and taken the top spot from Toronto FC. With an elo-rating gap of only 7.877, this could flip back pretty easily with a pair of results.
Similarly, Pacific FC are the first CPL club to reach top-of-the-table. With only 2-matches played in the league so far, that victory could be fleeting, especially with MacNaughton out of Wednesday’s match against Valour FC due to the two yellows he received Sunday.
Throughout April, Montreal Impact increased their elo-rating the most, by 26.570 points. The 2nd highest increase falls to Pacific FC who, due to their inaugural win, increased their rating by 13.923.
Expectedly, the largest drop was TFC, who fell by 19.178 points, and HFX Wanderers FC, with a 13.923 point drop. I expect a lot of movement from the CPL over May, before numbers begin to settle into positions better reflecting teams’ overall performances.
Voyageur’s Cup
The 2019 Voyageur’s Cup will be kicking off shortly, with the first 6 clubs set to face off. There’s a significant gap between some of the sides, so it will be interesting to see how L1O & PLSQ match up against the CPL newcomers.
We’ve pieced together a “radial” bracket for the competition (left). Here’s hoping it’ll be a spectacular show for everyone to follow.
Conclusion
By the end of May, all leagues will have played matches. This will put every elo-rating in motion, and every rank will be threaten in the overall list. There’s a possibility for CPL clubs to take 3rd overall, just as Ottawa Fury if they perform well, could step over CPL’s bottom. It will be very interesting to watch how this develops from week to week, and see just how far things come when we release our next update in June.
We will have weekly updates for our $1+ Patreons, and will return with our big monthly update in June. Until then, let’s go enjoy some soccer.
